Preface

Today’s Materialist mindset opposes God and godly living: Atheism rules the intelligentsia.

The atheistic, man exalting totalitarian regimes of the 20th century have not taught our intellectuals that Man as god is a travesty.

In today’s human centred, materialist conception of our world, we lose both perspective and sense of proportion.

We are beguiled by the sophisticated, technological society we have created. Technology, comfort and emotional stimulation determine our paradigm, priorities and psychology.

I object.

I hold that our existence is spiritual and God dependent. Deus ergo sumus.

Life according to the simple moral code of the Christian faith would eliminate war and hunger, fear, hatred, manipulation and exploitation.  Such evils are present within each human heart.

The critical, radical issue of our age is not the state of the environment, nor technology, nor human rights, nor inequality – as significant as they are. The fundamental issue is our failure philosophically, psychologically and practically to see our Creator as the central fact of our existence. To do so would necessarily engage us to a mindset of personal and social accountability – to a responsible and moral lifestyle.

That would focus attention on the fundamental issue: – individual self-centredness,  the root cause of our problems.

That would also simplify our complicated existence to what our feeble hearts can cope with; mutual edification could then displace appalling global exploitation.

Materialistic man worships his own image and appetites. He exacerbates the problem. By contrast, Christ centred living challenges us to give, not take. To sacrifice, not accumulate. To honour others as equals made in the image of God.

Nor can the Credo of Rights make a better world;  both its mindset and its perspective are wrong.  Rights reference self, not others. Rights speak the language of expectation, not responsibility. Rights focus partially, obscuring the broader context. In short, Rights talk distorts and even denies.

The psychology is wrong.

Psychology is key. Attitude; preconceptions; self justification; pride, fear, etc.

We live, however, in a culture which promotes every form of self indulgence, a climate which disdains self discipline and duty.

Religious Materialism is destroying us

True religion, however, must surely challenge us to be civlised and to play our part in society.

Jesus Christ addressed the essential, simple, psychological issue in his doctrine, summed up as:

love God and love others
